GM specifies a 150,000 mile timing belt change interval. However, we recommend planning for this service at 100,000 miles. The 2.8L diesel is an “interference” engine, so a broken belt will cause the valves and pistons to collide (or interfere). As a result, damage involving bent valves and, in some cases, a broken piston can lead to daunting repairs. Better to be safe than sorry, and replace the belt on the early side.
